Pillow loft is relative: the deeper your shoulder sinks into the mattress, the less height your pillow may need.

Quick answer

Choose a pillow by sleep position, loft, fill, support, cooling, adjustability, washability, and allergy considerations.

Health note: This is general consumer education, not medical advice. Persistent pain, insomnia, breathing concerns, or possible sleep apnea deserve attention from a qualified healthcare professional.

Pillow loft is a relationship

Loft is the pillow’s height, but effective loft changes under the weight of your head. Mattress firmness, shoulder width, sleep position, and fill compression all affect the height that feels neutral.

Side sleeper pillow needs

Side sleepers often need enough loft to fill the space between shoulder and head. A supportive medium-high profile can help avoid a steep side bend, but a deeply contouring mattress reduces the required height.

Back sleeper pillow needs

Back sleepers commonly prefer medium loft with enough contour to support the neck without pushing the head far forward. A shaped edge or adjustable fill can fine-tune the fit.

Stomach sleeper pillow needs

Stomach sleepers often use a low, compressible pillow—or none under the head—to limit neck rotation and extension. A small pillow under another body area is a separate comfort choice. Persistent neck discomfort deserves professional assessment.

Combination sleeper pillow needs

Fast-recovering or adjustable fills can handle position changes better than a highly sculpted fixed shape. Look for a loft that does not become extreme in any common position.

Adjustable fill

Removable shredded foam, fiber, or latex allows loft tuning. It can be messy, and the feel may be lumpier than a molded core, but adjustability is valuable when position or mattress depth changes.

Contour and cervical pillows

Shaped pillows create defined high and low zones. Some sleepers like the structure; others feel locked in. Cervical language describes a shape or support intention and should not be read as a medical treatment claim.

Cooling pillows

Ventilation, breathable covers, moisture management, and less dense fill can help. Cool-to-touch covers usually affect initial feel more than all-night heat. Flip-friendly designs are practical.

Washability and allergies

Check whether the whole pillow or only the cover is washable. A zippered washable protector can simplify care. Hypoallergenic is not a guarantee; verify exact fill and cover materials for known allergies.
